Spin on, stars, and dance your passing pirouettes,
Spring, sweet Selene, we praise your phases met.
Stay, stark Sun, and still your standing silhouettes,
And join your kin, the signs that wax and wane and set
See below, the globe that holds our lives and loves,
Roots of stone and iron, but fragile as a dove
The glowing ark we owe our journeys through the rough,
A million miles an hour, but only from above
And though the ages go,
From where you stare an eon is a
Day, to us below,
Eternity’s a life to make, ‘cause
Time waits for no man,
It rusts and it consumes,
Expresses all the entropy that grows, and so we
Fight, fight while we can
Resist the rising dark
Soon all things will fall,
And all we made will fade to Time.
Go, far globes, your whirling twirls above our heads,
Hold your glow within that darkened firmament
A million trillion miles your lonely show has sped
And, spied by eyes, a light that long ago had fled
And though our sight is slow,
You guide us through the dark’ning to the
Day, you stand aglow,
Eternity is just a wake, ‘cause
Time waits for no man,
It rusts and it consumes,
Expresses all the entropy that grows, and so we
Fight, fight while we can
Resist the rising dark
Soon all things will fall,
And all we made will fade to Time.
And though the seconds go,
In glass they pass through ev’ry single
Day, one thing I know:
Tomorrow’s coming just the same, cause
Time waits for no man,
It rusts and it consumes,
Expresses all the entropy that grows, and so we
Fight, fight while we can
Resist the rising dark
Soon all things will fall,
And will fail…
Time waits for no man
It rushes ever on
The stars one day will fall.
Though with our precious life we
Climb, climb as we may,
And shine our light today,
We light the world
And stay the stars
Before we pass through Time.

Translation:
You were once my beloved sister in the light.
But now I stay in dark deeps,
And, while I see your light, we can never touch.
Be with them, my darling,
Tell them their mother will always love them.

See the Southern Sky above
Hear the center calling
The edge that I'm fallin' to
I'd draw it it my dreams
With blue ink on paper
The edges felt on my skin
In this middle watch it gleams
By the smoking lamp, see
Where we all someday will spin.
I'm riding on this dove
With her sails full sprawling
I've stopped my stalling
Remember long ago when we left the foam
Crawled out, stood tall?
The Sisters in the sky, though, recall our form
They welcome me home.
Today
I’m wading in the water
I’m trading out my bothers
I say
That at last the past is passed
And what’s asked has come to pass
'Cause I stray
And the choice was mine and mine al(one)
To walk along that winding road
Pray
That I’ll open wide my arms
And forget about the harms
To reach you,
To reach you,
To reach you.
Find the cross that's overhead,
Shining in the sky
Makes me wonder if, maybe why
We seek it on the ground
And we raise our eyes
Is because it's so far beyond.
I left it all downtown,
All the papers, drawings,
A lifetime that never dawned,
Never came,
Never knew,
Never sighed.
You
You, I'll hold you in the dark, when it’s gloomy
Through all the nights and through the days
Like we knew
When you looked up and through the clouds, at our
Home, home, where we'll go
When the sun and the stars all grow cold…
Hold on, hold on, hold
Soon the moon will guide me home
Find my guide my pride
Stand tall, why must I survive?
Near dawn, hold on!
Past gone, hold on!
To reach you.

I lit a fire on Kenmare Head
The smoke touched stars above
To try and light your way back home
Just in case your eyes were closed
I lit a fire on Kenmare Head
I strained my eyes to spy
Any a sign I saw implied
That your ship had drawn nearby
I’ll look for you
I'll search toward east
Tear this world in two
‘Til time has ceased
I lit a fire on Kenmare Head
I breathe in the ash and smoke
Hands in my coat to try’n keep warm
I stood upon those cliffs alone
I wait for you
To find your way
Tear this world in two
To hear you say:
"I know, I’m free,
This world is beautiful to me
To love, to be,
This world is beautiful to see."
I lit a fire on Kenmare Head
Like I did some years ago
And as it expired, I said this prayer
For you, still lost at sea.

Translation:
I remember walking with you underneath the skies of blue:
Our hands we held together.
We washed our feet at the ocean’s edge,
And spoke of things beyond the days
And setting of the red afternoon sun.
Laughing, we were two oceans stirring together;
Our love a ship, riding the currents as they mixed.
Your seas will be remembered by me,
Until the darkness takes me,
And I will ever recall the sweet sound of your laughter.
But now I weep bitter black tears,
Remembering that which we had
And the gentle sighing of the tide which you were
Washing over my soul.
And, incomplete, my seas will break on land
Looking for their lost partner forever.

Cold clouds crowd the sun:
The light grows paler.
Grey glooms gain their ground,
Their weighty air
Threatens within this twilight,
And evening falls.
Waves crash in a rage:
A growing swell.
Wind, whipping and wild,
And far off bells
Echo within this twilight.
A broken spire
Glistens within the moonlight,
And reaches for sky.
Here in the storm,
In this night,
In this tempest, our hearts fail.
In this swarm,
We must fight
Through the tempest.
So, we sail, sail toward dawn,
Sail through night.
Past the tempest, all is bright.
Fight for love,
Fight for light,
Past the tempest, all is bright.
Let loose all the sails:
A windward blunder.
Rains rush, ocean sprays,
Your sight blurs. Wonder:
Is it the salt and madness
That’s burning your eyes?
Is it the tears and sadness
From doubts you denied?
Hold on, hold on!
There’s nothing that we can’t do together, love
In this world, and all the time,
We’ll reach out
And hold our dreams, together, love.
Hold on!
I’ll hold you when
The darkness falls, my love.
Hold on!
I’m always there,
Just don’t let go, my love.
Hold on, hold on!
We can reach out
And touch the stars together, love.
Hold on!
When I look in your eyes
And we stand side by side
I know that this love
Can live forever…

I've wandered the sea now for ten and twenty
And seen all the lands that are far from home
But here at the end, though, I find it empty:
I’ve wandered it alone.
When I was a young lad the world seemed ready,
A journal that’s filled up with unmarked leaves
And I’d be the words that would keep them reading
I’d write it on the sea
The day I took sail I told her
I said that I’d always return,
But there was a whole world that was calling,
So much to live and learn
So I took my leave, for young hearts are listless
And they are impatient, they rush to reach.
Impetuous youth, I’d known not that wisdom
Was something time would teach.
And weeks came to months, came to years,
And when we’d put in she would call.
She’d stand on the docks, gold hair streamin’,
Unbroken, proud and tall.
I know that this ship is sinking,
And I can’t escape, can’t fight Fate.
I wonder if she’s still standing,
If, looking East, she waits.
I’d have that the sun would be on her shoulder;
I’d set her a jewel like the beacon flames;
Tell tales to my sons, and, as one, grow older,
A wild thing she had tamed.
Please, God, while we lay here drifting,
Before my arms fail and I fade,
Please watch him, ensure that he lives on,
And that he will remain.
I know that this ship is broken,
And I can’t hold on, can’t fight Fate.
But hear me, my friend, my son, my legacy:
Run to life, don’t wait.
So if you put in and you hear her calling,
And if she's been wed but still asks of me
Don't tell her my end, say instead I'm trawling
And still wand'ring the sea…

Clouds cover moonlit night shining its faded light
Silent, the tides slide both low and high with their sigh
Eons and eons ago, women watched for them
Lighting their fires to guide home all the fishermen
Watched, the wave drew so near washing away our fears
Blessed us and baptized us when it broke on the pier
Brief, our despair and our cries at the things we've lost
Laughing the sea breaks, the drunken prince closed his eyes…
All of us
All of them
Not apart
Never end
All the rust
All the blood
All lie as one…
Soft call the bells, yawn their gonging upon the air,
Chiming their sighing tone, mourning for what was there.
Tried to rely on the walls that we built so high
Laughing the sea knocks, our wine-eyes comply…

The Devil’s Deal
03:24
|
|||
It was morning: cloudy morning
Many years past, and time was a loop.
Make your choices, and keep your voice down, and
Work your square of this dirt and this mud.
Raise your eyes up, you see a sparrow,
Floating weightless; a wing on the wind.
Blink to bounce back; the day has ended
In your ears hear the rush of your blood.
Run, run, run…
Racing river: watch a leaf weave
A lonely wanderer, riding the rain.
Is it powerless, and is it wanting, or
Can it change how it cruises the stream?
From above here, you stop your walking and
See it simply could drift to the shore.
But in roiling, it’s drifting helpless — it
Cannot see the world for the seas.
Run, run, run, run away…
Nightly ritual: brushing, scrubbing
Wash away all the dust of the day.
In the morning, begins another
An ostinato, an eternal motif.
Made your choices, kept your voice down,
You put away all your childish things.
See the window, and set reminder to
Call a man out to trim down that tree.
Run, run, run, run away…

The Devil’s Due
04:53

Steaming chamber: the fog is heavy
Wipe the mirror, the drops leave a trail.
In that looking glass, he sees a person he
Can’t connect with for lines and for grey.
Laying forgotten in a dusty drawer:
Drawings, papers, blue ink from a dream.
Lock the door tight, reset the pattern:
Detached, and pushing those memories away.
Run, run, run, run away…
Inching forward, chirps the guidance:
Expect delays as happens each day.
Rearview mirror catches glimpses:
An old man furrowed, remembering a tale.
Once a young boy, dreamt of flying:
Falling to Earth after chasing the Sun
Shaking head forgets; but there’s something, it’s
Gnawing, clawing, no mouth but it wails…
On the seas grow winds and shadows.
Make a penance, gather remnants.
Wake the morrow, pay off what’s owed.
Rise at long last; take this last chance
Water rushing from the bottom:
This sinking coffin of plastic and steel.
For these comforts: signed a blood oath,
Sacrificed all the futures for here.
Run, run, run, run away…
Break the glass and swim for day
Be baptised, saved, run far away…
When the darkness falls, run away
When you hear doubts call, run away
When the clock has stalled, run away

Stand on the shore,
Look to the sky
After the lightning's gone by.
What came before
What lies ahead,
All like this sea must soon end.
Make this your hour,
Make this your day;
Soon, by the sea,
All the sands wash away.
Wait not for life,
Wait not for peace,
Wait not for all that you seek.
Smiling, the dawn
Shines on our home.
Barefoot, we'll walk in the foam.
Breaks forth the day,
Maybe the last —
Waste not regretting what’s past.
Push back the veil,
See life to be;
Move past the shackles of doubt
To the sea.
Wait not for love,
Wait not for soon,
Wait not to dance by the moon.
We once were small,
Crouched in the sand,
Ignoring the blessings we had.
Now we stand tall,
We wash away
All of the rot and decay.
Await not the tide!
Await not the sun!
Await not to seek out
The seas that may come…
Smiling, the dawn
Shines on our home.
Barefoot, we'll walk in the foam.
Await not the tide;
Live, live a life.

So you’ve come, now, back where breath began: the place where I gave life. I cradled you, protecting you, suspending you.
I’ve expected you.
I watched you climb out to my shores, and grow tall and proud. And see! the things you’ve learned and made, you’ve earned and paid, what you’ve burned and frayed. The flags you raised, the crowns you wore…
All fail and fade in this deep. Welcome, child, welcome home.
You’ve returned, perhaps, for answers, to questions you may ask: of “whens” and “wheres”, and whispered “whys”, and desperate cries through tearful eyes.
Who will hear confession? Who here to care for doubts?
Welcome, child, I’ll hold you. Welcome home, I’ll hold you, my child, my dear child.
Poor child, poor child, dry your eyes. Dear child, dear child, cold and blind, my child, my child, lost and tired, seeking light in the night…
Hope’s alive. Near dawn, hold on. Storm’s gone, hold on…
And now, here, at the end of things, the failing and the fall, you hold, still reaching for the Light, the luminous white in the sun’s far bright. But now, here, at this twilight hour, you’ll hear my sighing voice:
Do not sleep! The darkness cannot keep; it’s harmless. Light was made Love within you.
Now is time.
Take my seas.
Go forth, child.

Postscript

And now the sun sets, and the night has fallen; and, here in the dark, moonlit shadows gleam.
But I’ll raise my head, for the ocean’s calling: I’m off to sail my sea.
